Architectural style of 20th century

This period is rich in style and texture as architects looked to the future with design innovation that were optimistic and influenced by international trends. At the same time, they continued to draw inspiration from the past and those traditional American styles that have become established in various regions.

From the International, Art Deco, and Modern styles with their cosmopolitan flair and Bauhaus roots to the traditional Colonial Revival styles in its various guises, American architecture had something for everyone.

During this period, architects and builders regularly borrowed stylistic elements from various periods. In some respects it’s difficult to assign many homes any single style.

Qualities of passive houses


  • The air is fresh, and very clean. Note that for the parameters tested, and provided the filters (minimum F6) are maintained. This can be counteracted somewhat via opening the window for a very short time, plants and indoor fountains. However, it must be noted that failure to exchange air with the outside during occupied periods is not advisable.
  • Because of the high resistance to heat flow (high R-value insulation), there are no "outside walls" which are colder than other walls.
  • Since there are no radiators, there is additional space on the rooms' walls.
  • Inside temperature is homogeneous; it is not possible to have single rooms (e.g. the sleeping rooms) at a different temperature from the rest of the house. Bedroom windows can be cracked somewhat to alleviate this when necessary.
  • The temperature changes only very slowly - with ventilation and heating systems switched off, a passive house naturally loses less than 0.5 °C (1 °F) per day (in winter), stabilizing at around 15 °C (59 °F) in the central European climate.
  • Opening windows or doors for a little time has only a very limited effect; after the windows are closed, the air very quickly returns to the "normal" temperature.
  • The air inside Passive Houses, due to the lack of ventilating cold air, is much drier than in 'Standard' Houses.

Heating and lighting inside of houses

Windows were very rare and light would usually come from candles or lamps which burnt animal fat and a central fire built on a raised clay hearth. Hearths were normally oblong or rectangular and often had a frame of wood or stone. The windows may have had vellum stretched over them, as this allows light in but keep draughts out or, rarely, may have been glazed. Windows might also have been shuttered. The fire was the 'central heating' and 'cooker', although a few houses may also have had a clay bread oven.

Doors had iron or wood hinges and were closed with a latch. Some doors would also have a lock. The floors would have been of packed earth or wood. The wooden floors may have been just easy floorboards or may have been made of tessellated wooden tiles. There is also some proof that halls may have had raised wooden floors, with steps leading up to the entrance.

Known about framed buildings


The framed buildings relied on the fact that a large number of posts were put into the ground to form the basis if the walls. These posts could be set as deep as 2.4m (8') deep on great buildings, although usually the post holes were much shallower than this. A wall plate then connected all the beams in each wall of the building. Tie beams running across the building, and the roof frames, were secured to the wall plates. The spaces between the upright posts were then filled in and the roof was finished. The floor was sometimes just packed earth, but could sometimes be planked, cobbled, or even given a 'concrete like' covering of slaked lime. There was regularly a raised hearth in the centre of the building. Framed buildings were often much larger than sunken featured building, and could have a second storey. The larger buildings tended to have extra rows of posts inside the building to help support the roof. Some framed buildings had wooden 'buttresses' around the outside to help support the building.

Known more about buildings

The buildings vary greatly in size from the small, single room houses only about 3 x 3.5m (10' x 11'8') like those found at West Stow to huge halls like that at Westminster which was 22 x 80m (76' x 262'). All the buildings fit into one of two large categories: sunken featured buildings and framed buildings. Both types are usually square or rectangular although a few round examples of each are known. Sunken featured buildings are those where a 'pit' forms part of the building, either as a living or working space, or as a sort of undercroft. These would have had a timber frame superstructure over them. Framed buildings are those where the whole building gain its strength from its timber frame, built around a series of posts set in the ground.
